    • ENGLISH ANALYSIS
  • After the 2001 9/11 attacks, the Americans launched themselves into Afghanistan to topple the Taliban, and defeat the al-Qaeda regime
  • In 2021, all these groups are now resurgent, even as US claims that the war on terror will continue
  • Options for the US are limited - it has lost its base in Afghanistan, there's no alliance with Pakistan now, and no nation in this region is keen on having American military bases
  • So a normal US drone attack will have to come from the Middle East, based on intelligence from far away, and that surely is a failed strategy!
  • The key mistake made by American President George Bush in 2001 (and thereafter) was that he was focused not on "only beating the terrorists", but on regime changes with the goal of remaking the Muslim world
  • The proof of this claim is the US attack on Iraq, soon after the Afghanistan regime change in 2002
  • The entire intelligence was false, and President Saddam Hussein did not possess any weapons of mass destruction (WMD) at all
  • But US was distracted for a long time, giving the terror groups a chance to regroup
  • It also built the right conditions inside Iraq for al-Qaeda (driven out of Afghanistan), and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi took charge of the dangerous "Al-Qaeda in Iraq"
  • President Obama in 2011 repeated the mistake (made by Bush in 2003), when he took the NATO forces to attack Libya
  • The US' belief was that its powere could be used to topple regimes, reorder politics, and remake the world (it didn't have a plan to tackle the instability that followed)
  • So lot of chaos, and fertile ground for jihadists - post-war Iraq was good for al-Qaeda, and a chaotic Libya allowed terrorist groups to spread across Africa
  • The rebel groups that US supported against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad ultimately led to the rise of the Islamic State (IS)
  • In parallel, all this chaos strengthened the Islamist and Islamophobic politics worldwide
  • The jihadists could easily sell the death of lakhs of Muslims as a "Christian West" crusade against Muslims (Anti Americanism was rampant)
  • Then came the refugees from these multiple wars, who rushed into the West, and became a tool for the far-right political parties (who were rising after the 2008 financial crisis)
  • Islamophobia rose rapidly, as lakhs of asylum-seekers rushing out of Libya and Syria crossed the Mediterranean Sea to Europe
  • The West stood divided now, due to the regime-change wars
  • In parallel, as the US lost time and money in these wars, China was silently rising
  • The shock came to the US by 2015, when it saw China as the only real rival (post Cold War), but it was too late
  • Four trends had arrived by now - (i) US lost the Afghanistan war, (ii) al-Qaeda split into branches (Biden's "metastasised threat"), (iii) ethono-nationalist and Islamophobic politics grew in US, and (iv) global unipolarity was over
  • That is why President Biden went out of Afghanistan in one shot, and has changed strategic direction towards China now; the neo-conservative era of regime-change policy is over
  • But don't assume that the US power has ebbed; the US was at its worst in the 1970s as seen in the failures in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iran, but it bounced back smartly
  • US will now wait for China to commit major blunders, while not engaging in any new wars
  • The new US-China cold war has now started, but terror outfits have enough room now to consolidate in their new havens

    • HINDI ANALYSIS
