• US President Biden is now facing criticism from his rivals in the Republican Party, as well as from within the Democrat ranks. The public definitely is not happy at the manner of exit from Afghanistan
• There was a deadline, but there was no proper planning, and that resulted in many deaths in the terror attack at the airport
• The chaos at the airport, even as the Taliban smoothly took charge of nearly the whole country, showed how pathetic the endgame was to be (comparable to Vietnam experience, 1975)
• White House's reputation is significantly dented, and in this milieu, Biden has to now sell a new vision for South Asia (to his domestic supporters)
• First of all, he'll have to accept that the American approach of building national institutions in Afghanistan failed, as it neglected local cultural peculiarities
• Tribal loyalties trumped Western rational decision-making
• Clearly, the US may not want to cut ties with the Taliban, before they settle firmly, and announce what their plans for the country are
• So many aspects to be seen - about the terror of Haqqani network, Pakistan's ISI, China's push into economic projects, and India's links with Afghanistan
• The biggest question for US, though, remains. Will America now engage more, or less, or at the same level, with other Asian allies?
• VP Kamala Harris went to Singapore and Vietnam precisely to reassure allies that US isn't abandoning the region (and that a rules-based global order matters)
• Now comes the role of ground-level engagements like the Quad, and deeper bilateral relations with friendly nations
• Without that, Asian countries may have second thoughts
• Two potential troubles that may emerge if US isn't able to convince Asian friends - (i) Afghanistan may finally start breeding terror groups, and (ii) China will happily claim its place in the hegemonic ladder in Asia
