• Tsai Ing-wen wins again: President Tsai Ing-wen of DPP (Democratic Progressive Party) has won the election again, doubling Beijing's headache as Hong Kong too saw pro-democracy parties sweeping the municipal elections in Nov 2019.
• Taiwan and Hong Kong: HK returned to China in 1997, but Taiwan has been self-ruled every since Chiang Kai-shek of KMT came here in 1949 (defeated by the Communists on mainland) and set up the ROC (Republic of China). Taiwan elects its leaders directly since 1996, something HK now wants.
• Verdict on China: The Taiwan elections were a message from citizens that they won't accept the "One Country, Two System" prevalent in Hong Kong. That is what the PRC thinks of as the final answer to the 'Taiwan Question'.
• How she won: Tsai Ing-wen was trailing, but the events in Hong Kong scared the Taiwanese into voting her back to power in a big way! Tsai supports HK protestors, and Beijing keeps attacking her for it.
• The other party in Taiwan: KMT was pro-PRC and wanted deeper economic integration. Tsai is anti-PRC. So PRC is pushing nations to cut diplomatic relations, and only 14 UN members have relations now. Sadly for PRC, all that helped Tsai win, as she projected it as the coming end of democracy!
• Xi Jinping and Macau: He feels that Macau's success is proof of strength of "One Country, Two Systems". Xi says that 'one country' is the premise and precondition for 'two systems'. It is a red line not to be crossed! But Taiwanese and Hong Kongers don't agree to it anymore.
• The numbers: 86% Taiwanese do not want reunification with the mainland. 53% in HK identify as 'only Hongkongers'.
• China dream of Xi: He is working on the 'great rejuvenation' which is part of the "China dream", and wants Taiwan to be reunited. They see no problem in getting 2.3 crore people of Taiwan forcibly reunited.
• What is needed: Beijing promises stability, security and economic growth. But when identity and values are involed, it does not work that way. The "China model" being promised for the world must be first proved in Taiwan.
• Summary : For the "One Country Two Systems" idea, Beijing is getting a double challenge from Hong Kong as well as Taiwan now.
