• The law is supreme in US : 129 Indian students were arrested on charges of "wilfully violating immigration laws of US to stay and work there". That is a warning to all Indians to check all facts, and follow the letter of the law, before moving abroad. These students are with the "University of Farmington, Michigan".
• [The fake university was set up by the DHS's investigating unit in Greater Detroit area to bust the "pay-and-stay" racket.]
• Knowingly, or Unknowingly : The question is whether the students knew they were committing a fraud, or fell victim to the I-20 fraud (student document allowing paid work, as per Curricular Practical Training).
• A big chain : The prosecution in US says that the students knew of the fraud - no classes, no credit scores, no academic requirements - and intention was "pay to stay" and gain access to employment. Eight recuiters (Indian origin) have been indicted.
• MEA's stand : The Ministry of External Affairs has said that recruiters are different from the students, and those who are eligible to pursue studies at a proper University must get another opportunity and not be summarily deported, or humiliated. And future entry of such students must not be prejudiced. (a good stand by the MEA)
• Scandals galore : This Farmington case was caught in a sting operation by the Dept of Homeland Security, but the earlier cases (Tri-Valley Univ. and Herguan Univ.) were of degree mills run by people using fake documents to help students stay in the US and maybe even get jobs.
• SEVP : Indian students need to be informed about all rules in the Student and Exchange Visitor Program, and identifying credentialed institutions.
• The deeper message : Indian policymakers should wake up to the truth that the aspirations of our youth need serious investments into higher education, job-creation and raising the living standards. Our demographic dividend won't wait for ever.
• Summary : The arrest of Indian students in a fake University case in US highlights the desperation of Indian youth to seek better opportunities elsewhere, and should be a wakeup call for Indian policymakers.
