• ENGLISH ANALYSIS

• Retail inflation data for August and July indicate that price pressures are reducing, as the CPI August slowed at 5.3% (July's was 5.59%)
• But a closer examination of price trends in CPI and WPI constituents warns that there are lurking pressures [CPI - Consumer Price Inflation, WPI - Wholesale Price Inflation]
• The base effect is working too, because last year this number was high at this time; and if a month-on-month comparison is done from July '21 to August '21, then inflation rose by 0.25%
• Three key food groups became costlier in this - (i) meat and fish, (ii) dairy and (iii) oils and fats
• Edible oils have gone out of control for many months now - August and July nos. were 33% and 32.5%, respectively (new duty reductions were announced in Sept as earlier cuts didn't soften prices)
• Protein sources like eggs and pulses too are costlier
• But in vegetables, there was a wide deflation in prices, contributing to overall reduction in inflation in food and beverages
• Other segments with rising prices were fuel and light, clothing and footwear, health, household goods and services
• Transport and communication were costlier by 10.2% (July 10.5%) [this includes pump prices of fuel, currently very high]
• Manufactured products faced rising prices due to higher transportation costs, and input price pressures (all from WPI data), and price rise was 11.4% (fourth straight month of double-digit rise)
• Most CEOs in a survey expected CPI inflation for 2021-22 to be near or higher than RBI's 6% upper limit
• Inflation is ultimately about consumers' and businesses' expectation of price trends
• Future inflation expectations end up hurting sentiment, and slowing economic activity
• Best is to cut fuel taxes immediately and aid recovery

• अगस्त और जुलाई के खुदरा मुद्रास्फीति के आंकड़ों से संकेत मिलता है कि कीमतों का दबाव कम हो रहा है, क्योंकि अगस्त में सीपीआई ५.३% (जुलाई ५.५९%) धीमा हो गया था

• बढ़ती कीमतों के साथ अन्य खंड ईंधन और प्रकाश, कपड़े और जूते, स्वास्थ्य, घरेलू सामान और सेवाएं थे
