• In 2021, in the fourth change of CM in a state, the BJP replaced Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani with Bhupendra Patel (it was an unexpected, sudden move) [this is classic high-command culture]
• In recent past, a journalist had written on this possible change, and he was charged with sedition and sent to jail!
• The BJP in Gujarat has enjoyed Patels (Patidars) as a major support base, but since 2001, the rise of Narendra Modi changed all that
• Anandiben Patel was the CM once Narendra Modi went to Delhi as PM, but had to leave soon
• Modi and Amit Shah changed their strategy and ejected a few Patels, to bring in a larger collection of caste groups in positions of power
• This 'Gujarat Experiment' was then carried out nationally, but within Gujarat, the Patels rebelled against the duo
• Vijay Rupani failed in containing the horrible toll from Covid-19, and was in general a weak administrator or managing the social coalition
• Today, the Aam Aadmi Party is going strong in Gujarat, Patels are unhappy and assembly elections are close
• The new CM is a first-time MLA elected from same constituency that was vacated by Anandiben Patel
• Politically, this move is a reversal from the tried-and-tested BJP strategy of making coalitions of diverse caste groups under a leader from marginal caste
• In 2014, Modi projected himself as one from a backward class, and many leaders were chosen likewise (notble exceptions included UP CM Yogi Adityanath, a Rajput)
• But dominant castes have hated this strategy, and now it's unmanageable for the BJP; that's why when Karnataka CM B.S. Yediyurappa was removed, only a Lingayat (dominant community) replaced him
• The ongoing tension wth Jats in UP and Haryana exemplifies this issue, and Haryana CM Khattar is facing the heat
• In the Hindutva scheme of things, dominant castes are now seeking more power share
• But overall, perhaps the BJP is quite sure of the continuing support of marginal and poorer communities, and is hence risking giving more share to dominant castes
