    • ENGLISH ANALYSIS
  • A complete phase of separatist politics came to an end in Kashmir with the death of Syed Ali Shah Geelani, 92, who was more an Islamist than a Kashmiri nationalist
  • He was a key hurdle in any meaningful talks between Indian government and Kashmiri separatists, as he promoted armed rebellion, and was pro-Pakistan; but he didn't let a formula succeed what Pakistani dictator Pervez Musharraf had given
  • The govt. clamped down heavily after his death, but there wasn't any major outpouring of grief; though this may be also because people are tired of conflict now
  • Modi govt. abandoned all negotiations in Kashmir, with separatists as well as regular political parties, after a feeble June 2021 effort
  • The August 2019 restructuring of the J&K state into two UTs had weakened the separatists substantially, already
  • Now, things in neighbourhood are suddenly changed, with the return of the Taliban in Afghanistan
  • The Taliban have said they will raise voice for Kashmir Muslism, and Pakistan anyway has always wanted a "resolution" in Kashmir (and said it is related to peace in Afghanistan)
  • Globally, Islamists are happy with the US withdrawal, and Pakistan is pulling strings inside Afghanistan, clearly (US may need to re-engage with it, differently)
  • For Kashmir, the Indian government has rendered useless questions on secession and autonomy, and restricted the debate to just full statehood
  • But calm in the valley doesn't mean everyone agrees (acquiescence)
  • The June 2021 dialogue hasn't been taken forward meaningfully, and political parties are unhappy; the govt. must take it forward genuinely
  • The death of Mr Geelani is an opportunity for India to re-start conversations with Kashmiri groups, and it must not be missed to ensure a detailed dialogue that truly integrates people of Kashmir in India

    • HINDI ANALYSIS
