    • ENGLISH ANALYSIS
  • A democracy is like the human body, made up of a skeleton holding it together, while breathing, circulation and new cells give it life; if the vital processes become weak, even a strong frame becomes useless and the system rots away
  • In a democracy, there are structures - the constitution and the laws - and citizens participate actively, thereby making it different from authoritarian states
  • Ultimately, citizens have a say in what kind of laws are made, and open-minded discussions make it successful
  • However, if the law-making assemblies become chambers for close-minded partisan politics, there can be no solutions to complex, systemic problems of that country (in the 21st century)
  • What kind of problems? Climate change, historical inequalities, rapidly rising inequalities, and rising violence
  • US Congress is hit badly by such partisan politics, and Indian Parliament has debates that are rowdy
  • One may think that only "Constitutions, elections and assemblies" can turn a nation to a democracy, but that's too simplistic
  • The real life is between elections, and what happens outside the assemblies, when citizens belonging to different religious groups interact with each other; their tolerance will make or break the democratic discourse
  • India is witnessing a crack in the nation, on the likes of "people like us" and "people not like us", and if left unchecked, these divisions will grow dangerously deep and break the national fabric itself (like US seems to be witnessing)
  • Sadly, the media that could have acted as a balancing force, has turned partisan, and social media is hardening the divide further (hate bombs all around)
  • The problem arises when any discussion on national problem in dragged into "who is responsible for it", instead of what can be done about it
  • Europe is trying to find a solution to ensure more citizen participation on a regular basis; its "Citizens for Europe" movement wants to make a European Citizens' Assembly (Transnational forum)
  • But it must ensure that other than online meetings, there are meaningful deliberations offline as well, carefully moderated to ensure something emerges
  • No one teaches us "how to listen well" though we are taught "how to speak better", and even when we listen to others, it's focused more on the "what" and not the "why"
  • There have to be dialogues to understand, and not debates to win
  • Monocultures of thought are as dangerous as monocultures in nature, and diversity is needed
  • It is time to ensure greater understanding of each other, if the dark days of elected authoritarianism are to ever end

    • HINDI ANALYSIS
