• National Loving Day: June 12 is marked as National Loving Day in the US by inter-racial couples, and is a meaningful symbol. Actually the couple Martha and Richard Loving of Virginia sought the US Supreme Court's help after their co-habitation was declared illegal. 
• Civil rights movement: By 1967, it was drawing to a close, and right then, the US S.C. struck down all anti-miscegenation laws by a 9-0 verdict. (CJ was Earn Warren)
• Backward nation: So a century after the US Civil War ended slavery, the US ended such discriminatory laws! But the verdict took its time filtering into the society. The Warren court gave other progressive verdicts too, eliminating various forms of segregration.
• A long road: Five decades after the civil rights movement (and 155 yrs after the civil war), the US still has racial discrimination. Law enforcement is the worst culprit.
• Blacks suffer: Research indicates that Blacks suffer discrimination, profiling and wrong jailing in the US. One can see how Whites and Blacks are treated differently, especially in crime and punishment. In arrests, convictions and sentencings, blacks fare worse than whites.
• US versus others: On one hand, the US teaches rules to the rest of the world. On the other, the world now watches deep schisms opening up in US itself - first on healthcare, and now on racism. But Americans discriminate on the basis of colour only.
• How Indians discriminate: The range is much wider - colour, class, religion, region, caste, sub-caste etc. Even in China and Japan, as in EU countries, some or the other form of discrimination exists. It seems a part of the human DNA itself!
• Later-life constructs: It is clear that genes have little to do with race, ethnicity, religion, or caste. These are purely artificial constructs. Very young children do not understand such differences at all.
• Teaching us parity: If we humans can teach each other the value of truth of universal parity - that all of us are 99.9% genetically identical - then we have a shared destiny. US used this to race to the top, though with imperfections. The future belongs to countries that do so, and others will fall by the wayside.
