• Education as the backbone of development: Individual and societal development, and commitment to constitutional values are at the heart of the National Education Policy (NEP). 
• An educationist’s take on NEP: The author’s work and experience spans curricula development, teaching programme design, and education-centric research in collaboration with civil society institutions of great repute. He reckons the policy encompasses everything anyone in education could have wished for. 
• Credit where due: NEP 2020 builds on the draft Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan (KK), former ISRO chief and chancellor of University of Rajasthan and NIIT University, and his team tabled in 2019. Their diligence and GoI’s keenness to endorse the bold policy must be applauded. 
• Implementation must match formulation: From this point on, it is effective implementation of the transformative policy that will truly manifest the intent.
• Early actions crucial for long-term success: Bold changes proposed in the policy will meet resistance. It is imperative to action some significant steps in the first few years. 
• Increasing public expenditure to 6% of GDP: The KK Committee draft proposed increasing public expenditure over time. However, the upward trend must be significant enough in the first year to communicate government’s categorical support and backing.
• Making it happen: Other actions that must see some movement early on include realignment of regulation and institutional architecture in education, closure of degree-selling institutions, and normalization of compensation across primary and secondary.
• Quality of action: Setting changes in motion is not sufficient, exceptional expertise in rolling them out is of paramount importance. Some of the immediate steps that require quality effort include significant improvement in National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2021 over NCF 2005, creation of the Higher Education Commission, and introduction of four-year teacher education degree programs. 
• Commitment from all quarters: GoI will have to take steps to make the implementation a national pursuit that rises above state politics and ensures effective participation of public sector organizations and individuals.
• Spirit of the policy as the anchor: Education as a social-human process, significance of organization culture, causal relationship between quality and fairness, and commitment to public education are the key tenets every action must be anchored to.
