A year on, Article 370 and Kashmir mythmaking

    • An old commitment: The BJP had always promised to undo the Article 370 of Indian constitution. It did it. But there are other collective myths that have floated in the air for decades, making Jammu and Kashmir what it is today.
    • Elements of mythmaking: Kashmir has it all - great beauty, cross-border terror, deep states and agents, war, and heroism. Almost all governments since 1950s contributed to the mythmaking.
    • Article 370, 35A: It is commonly believed that these are responsible for terrorism in the valley, and once removed, terror would be finished. That hasn't happened. These articles were blamed for stalling the growth of J&K, but that's not borne out by material facts.
    • The reverse is true: J&K started large-scale land reforms in 1950s, possible due to Article 370, and reduced inequality. Private investors avoided Kashmir due to militancy, not due to Article 370. These articles never pushed militancy in J&K.
    • Second myth: It is believe that only because of huge funding from Delhi could the region do better compared to other states. If that is true, then it means Kashmir is already developed, so why abrogate Article 370 to start developing it?
      1. Delhi did fund J&K, but never over-did it.
      2. Two kinds of funds went into J&K - the first went into running the government, and second into economic development.
      3. The huge bureaucracy of J&K were always financed by the central government.
      4. Special category funds were received like with all other states.
      5. To sum it, Article 370 helped J&K develop more, not less!
    • Third myth: It is readily believed that development will defeat terrorism. The truth today is that this is not so for Kashmir anymore. There are very complex historical reasons, ethnic demands, growing religious polarisation, and Pakistan's constant interference. A multi-layered conflict is sought to be rectified overnight by the stroke of a pen. It has never happened anywhere in the world before.
    • Zero empathy: Decades of perception-making about Kashmiris has led to a condition today where the average Indian has no empathy with them any more, irrespective of the ground situation.
    • What was achieved: If an objective analysis of Kashmir from 05 August 2019 onwards is done, most indicators are very unsettling. India has gotten stuck between a rock and a hard place. The BJP cannot go back to pre-2019 position for political reasons, and the new reality is not comforting at all.
                                                                                                                      Read more on - Polity | Economy | Schemes | S&T | Environment
