- World – Nepal’s PM Oli springs a surprise on detractors, dissolves Parliament – Nepal plunged into yet another political crisis Sunday (December 20) after PM K.P. Sharma Oli dissolved the 275-member House of Representatives — the lower house of the country’s Parliament. The move comes in the wake of an ongoing power tussle in the ruling Nepal Communist Party, and Oli is believed to have taken this step as a last resort after losing majority support. According to Article 85 (1) and Article 76 (7) of the Constitution of Nepal, the lower house, called the ‘Pratinidhi Sabha’, has a term of five years unless dissolved earlier. However, there is no provision in the Constitution that allows the Prime Minister, who is leading the two-thirds majority government, to dissolve it unilaterally. As a result, several opposition parties have taken to the streets to protest against PM Oli’s decision, the first dissolution in the democratic history of the country.
- Covid-19 – Weekly Covid cases in India drop 17%, the steepest decline so far – Covid-19 infections and deaths continued to fall in the country 14 weeks after the pandemic peaked, with cases this week registering a 17.3% decline, making it the steepest weekly drop in percentage terms. India recorded 171,520 cases during December 14-20, the lowest since the June 29-July 5 week, and nearly 36,000 down from the previous week. This was the sixth straight week of falling cases and 13th overall in the last 14 weeks. The weekly toll dropped to its lowest in over six months, with the virus claiming 2,444 lives in the past seven days. The last time India saw fewer deaths in a week was in June 8-14 (2,318). India is the only country among the 10 worst hit — apart from Argentina — that has not seen a major surge in cases over the past two months.
- World – Over 340 students in Nigeria back with parents after ordeal – Nigeria’s freed schoolboys have reunited with their joyful parents after being held captive for nearly a week by gunmen allied with jihadist rebels in the country’s northwest. Relieved parents hugged their sons tightly on December 19 in Kankara, where more than 340 boys were abducted from the Government Science Secondary school on the night of December 11. Many of the schoolboys expressed worry about returning to school, saying their captors threatened them with death if they went back to classes. Nigeria’s Boko Haram jihadist rebels claimed responsibility for the abductions, saying they attacked the school because they believe Western education is un-Islamic. Another abduction of more than 80 students happened on Saturday (December 19) night in an area nearby, but the pupils were quickly rescued by security forces after a fierce gun battle, police announced on December 20.
- Covid-19 – New virus strain out of control: U.K. – British Health Secretary Matt Hancock has said that the government has imposed a strict Christmas lockdown in London and southeast England because a new strain of the coronavirus was “out of control”. The World Health Organization is calling on its members in Europe to step up measures against COVID-19. Outside Britain, nine cases of the new strain have been reported in Denmark, as well as one case in the Netherlands and another in Australia. Mr. Hancock warned that the strict measures that affect almost a third of England’s population could stay in place until the virus vaccine is fully rolled out. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced that millions must cancel Christmas plans and stay home because the new strain was spreading far more quickly.

PayPal, which began India operations in November 2017, said it was fully committed to follow due processes and is "carefully reviewing the matter". The company has also been charged with "defeating and frustrating" the tenets of public interest and the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), which aims to keep the country's financial system safe from economic crimes, terrorist financing and black money transactions.
- Polity & Governance – Govt writes to farmers, seeks new date for talks – The Centre sent a new letter late Sunday (December 20) night to 40 farm leaders asking them to suggest a date for another round of talks and the issues they would like to discuss. The move came hours after the unions protesting on Delhi’s borders against three central agri-marketing laws observed ‘Shahidi Divas’ to pay homage those who died during the agitation, drew up plans for a 24-hour relay hunger strike on December 21, and threatened to block NH9 if their counterparts were not allowed to move towards the Ghazipur border in 24 hours. It outlined the details of amendments to the laws to which the Centre had agreed.

Congressional leaders plan to attach the coronavirus aid package, which includes $600 direct payments to individuals and a $300 per week unemployment compensation supplement, to a $1.4 trillion spending bill funding government programmes through September 2021. They face a government funding deadline of midnight on December 20.
- World – Biden introduces his climate team, says no time to waste – Just as the United States has needed a unified, national response to COVID-19, it needs one for dealing with climate change, President-elect Joe Biden said on December 19 as he rolled out key members of his environmental team. The approach is a shift from Donald Trump’s presidency, which has been marked by efforts to boost oil and gas production while rolling back government efforts intended to safeguard the environment. The incoming Biden team will try to undo or block many of the current administration’s initiatives. There also will be an emphasis on looking out for the low-income, working class and minority communities hit hardest by fossil fuel pollution and climate change.
