- SECTION 1 - TEN NEWS HEADLINES
- Economy – PM announces taxpayers’ charter – PM Modi has launched a “Transparent Taxation — Honouring the Honest” platform that provides faceless assessment, faceless appeal and a taxpayers’ charter. He appealed to those not paying taxes, despite having the ability, to come forward and commit themselves to the cause of making the country self-reliant. While the faceless assessment and taxpayers’ charter came into force on Thursday itself, the faceless appeal system will be available from September 25, the birth anniversary of Deendayal Upadhyaya. The assessment system seeks to eliminate corrupt practices by doing away with the territorial jurisdiction of income-tax offices.
- World – UAE, Israel reach agreement to establish diplomatic ties – President Donald Trump has said that the United Arab Emirates and Israel have agreed to establish full diplomatic ties as part of a deal to halt the annexation of occupied land sought by the Palestinians for their future state. The announcement makes the UAE the first Gulf Arab state to do so and only the third Arab nation to have active diplomatic ties to Israel. For Israel, the announcement comes after years of boasting by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that his government enjoys closer ties to Arab nations than publicly acknowledged. For the UAE, it further burnishes its international campaign to be seen as a beacon of tolerance in West Asia despite being governed by autocratic rulers.
- World – Lebanon Parliament declares a state of emergency in Beirut – Lebanon’s Parliament has approved a state of emergency in the capital, Beirut, in its first session since the tragic explosion last week, granting the military sweeping powers amid rising popular anger and political uncertainty. The blast that killed more than 170 people and injured at least 6,000 others changed the face of the capital and forced the government to resign. Before resigning, the government declared a state of emergency in Beirut that granted the military sweeping powers, including the power to declare curfews, prevent public gatherings and censor media as well as refer civilians to military tribunals for alleged security breaches.
- Economy – US eases ban on foreigners returning to same job role – The US Department of State has permitted foreign nationals to seek an H-1B or an L-1 visa and return to the US to resume their previously held employment. In addition, individuals — including those in information technology (IT) — may also qualify for entry to the US under ‘national interest exception’ norms, subject to meeting certain conditions. Immigration experts believe that the slew of lawsuits against the entry ban on a wide range of visa holders, which had the backing of such US tech giants as Apple and Microsoft, forced the Trump administration to backtrack and introduce relaxations. These relaxations are a huge relief to hundreds of US job holders who were visiting India for dealing with family emergencies and functions and, owing to the travel ban announced by President Donald Trump on June 22, found that they could not obtain a visa stamp and travel back to the US.
- Economy – Inflation accelerates to 6.93% dimming chances of a rate cut – India’s retail inflation accelerated to 6.93% in July on higher food prices, remaining above the RBI’s medium-term target for a tenth straight month. Food prices soared due to supply-side disruptions caused by lockdowns. They rose 9.62% compared to a jump of 8.72% in June. A steady increase in COVID-19 cases has disrupted the supply chain as lockdowns have continued at regional levels. Fearing a sharp acceleration in inflation the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) last week kept interest rates on hold, after reducing the repo rate by a total of 115 basis points since February. The RBI’s medium-term inflation target is set at 4%. India’s economy is expected to contract more than 4.5% in the current fiscal, but some analysts do not expect the central bank to cut rates further this year.
- Economy – India gifts Maldives its biggest infra project – India has announced several developmental projects in the Maldives, including a $500 million Greater Malé Connectivity Project (GMCP), billed as the largest ever infrastructure project in the country. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also announced the creation of an air bubble to facilitate movement for employment, tourism, medical emergencies. India said in a statement that it will support implementation of GMCP through a grant of $100 million and a new Line of Credit of $400 million. Jaishankar noted that this project will connect Malé with three neighbouring islands - Villingili, Gulhifahu (where a port is being built under Indian LoC) and Thilafushi (new industrial zone) – by construction of a bridge-and-causeway link spanning 6.7 km. India also announced the commencement of a direct cargo ferry service and extension of urgent financial assistance.
- COVID-19 – Biggest nat’l daily rise: 66k+ cases, 1,008 deaths – An unprecedented surge in the Covid-19 pandemic in India on Thursday (August 13) saw the number of fresh cases and deaths touch record highs. New infections on the day shot up to 66,037, while fatalities soared to 1,008. India’s total caseload has crossed 24 lakh. This was the second time that deaths had crossed 1,000 in a day. Thursday’s toll was just 1 higher than 1,007 deaths on August 9.
- COVID-19 – New Zealand races to track down the source of the Auckland coronavirus outbreak – After more than 100 days without community transmission, New Zealand is now grappling with a fresh coronavirus outbreak in its largest city, Auckland. The resurgence of the virus has bamboozled health officials and sent politicians into a spin about the possible source. It all comes after New Zealanders had been quietly confident they had eliminated COVID-19 outside of the quarantine centres set up to take in Kiwis returning from overseas. But earlier this week, an Auckland family of four tested positive, sending shudders through the whole city and sending businesses back into lockdown.
- Defence – Coast Guard''s offshore patrol vessel ''Sarthak'' launched – An offshore patrol vessel (OPV) for the Indian Coast Guard was launched and rechristened as "Sarthak" on Thursday (August 13). The OPV is fitted with the state-of-the-art navigation and communication equipment, sensor and machinery. The 105 metre ship displaces approximately 2,350 tonnes and is propelled by two 9,100 KW diesel engines designed to attain a maximum speed of 26 knots, with an endurance of 6,000 nautical miles.
- World – China launches 'Clean Plate' campaign against food waste – China has stepped up measures to reduce food waste, after President Xi Jinping called the amount wasted "shocking and distressing". The "Clean Plate Campaign" comes after Mr Xi highlighted that Covid-19 had "sounded the alarm" on food waste. He added that China had to "maintain a sense of crisis about food security". It also comes after weeks of mass flooding across southern China which left farms wrecked and ruined tons of produce. Following Mr Xi's message, the Wuhan Catering Industry Association urged restaurants in the city to limit the number of dishes served to diners - implementing a system where groups must order one dish less than the number of diners. So under this system dubbed "N-1", a group of 10 people can only order 9 dishes.
