- SECTION 1 - TEN NEWS HEADLINES
- Trump’s India Visit–Ahmedabad’s new Motera Stadium is set to welcome US President Donald Trump with PM Narendra Modi playing host and over a lakh people expected in the arena for the ‘Namaste Trump’ event. A packed stadium will greet Trump and Modi when they reach the venue after a 22km roadshow that will take them to Sabarmati Ashram en route. The US president has indicated in tweets that he is looking forward to the big public reception planned for him in Ahmedabad.
- Trump’s India Visit–The India-US strategic partnership will see the two countries focusing on four key objectives this week — peace and prosperity in the Indian Ocean, counter-terrorism, free and fair trade, and energy. President Donald Trump and PM Narendra Modi will also consider ways to promote regional connectivity based on transparency, responsible debt practices and, importantly for India, without violating sovereignty and territorial integrity.Beyond attempts to weed out irritants in bilateral ties, regional and international cooperation will be an important focus area for Trump and Modi when they meet on Tuesday. While the US is expected to encourage India to further promote stability and security in Afghanistan, the Indian side will seek an unambiguous condemnation of cross-border terrorism so as to ensure Pakistan doesn’t feel further emboldened at a time it is openly claiming credit for the Afghan peace deal.
- Delhi CAA riots: 15 hurt in stone-pelting–Violence erupted in the Jafrabad area of northeast Delhi anti and pro-CAA protesters came face to face, leading to stonepelting and vandalising of vehicles and shops. Police and paramilitary forces managed to restore calm by late evening. Fifteen people, including six policemen and two camera persons were reported injured.
- Regional Peace – SAARC revival–Successful regional integration — both economic and security — depends on the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) becoming fully functional at the highest levels, Sri Lanka’s former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said. Emphasising the need for countries in the region to link up both strategically and economically, Mr. Wickremesinghe said the postponement of the Kathmandu SAARC Summit in 2017 due to heightened tensions between India and Pakistan had brought the regional grouping “to a standstill”.
- New highway in AP, threat to wildlife –Even as work is under way since 2013 to lay a 156 km road through the Namdapha National Park, India’s easternmost tiger reserve, a new highway project to build with a 692.7 km highway through the 862 sq km Pakke Tiger Reserve (PTR) in East Kameng district. Named the East-West Industrial Corridor, the highway aims to connect Bhairabhunda in West Kameng district and Manmao in Changlang district along Arunachal Pradesh’s border with Assam. The project makes no mention of compensation for people likely to be displaced. What has set alarm bells ringing for environmentalists is a 40 km elevated stretch through the heart of the PTR as advised by a Gujarat-based firm. As experts says that elevation is no guarantee against felling of trees and disturbing wildlife in the sensitive PTR. This corridor will be a threat to the adjoining Nameri Tiger Reserve in Assam too.
- Gangster Ravi Pujari held in South Africa –Fugitive gangster Ravi Pujari has been arrested in South Africa and was being brought to India by a team of officials. Pujari is wanted in many cases in different parts of the country, including Karnataka. He had been on the run for over 15 years, and was deported to Senegal in West Africa following his arrest, and later extradited. He jumped bail in Senegal last year after being arrested there.
- COVID-19 updates–In response to growing concerns about the spread of Covid-19 — the disease caused by the novel coronavirus first observed in Wuhan, China — in South Korea, President Moon Jae-in has raised the country’s threat alert level to the highest of its four levels. The country is currently struggling to stop the rapid spread of the novel virus, and has the second largest number of confirmed cases in the world, 602 (not counting the passengers of the Diamond Princess cruise ship docked on the shores of Japan). In the span of less than a week, the number of confirmed South Korean cases has jumped more than tenfold, six people have died, and over 8,000 people considered to be at risk of infection are still undergoing testing.
- US Presidential Elections – Bernie Sanders Won Nevada Caucuses, Strengthening His Primary Lead. His triumph will provide a burst of momentum that may make it difficult for the still-fractured moderate wing of the Democratic Party to slow his march to the nomination. The Vermont senator defeated his opponents by a large margin, showing strength with minority and working-class voters. But the other candidates vowed to fight on.
- Earthquake at Turkey-Iran border – Nine people, including three children, have died following a 5.7 magnitude earthquake that struck the Turkey-Iran border region. Twenty-one people were injured — including eight who were in a critical condition.
- Firms to be allowed direct foreign listing – In a move that could open up a fresh source of funding for domestic unicorns and new-age companies, an expert committee constituted by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has endorsed direct listing of Indian firms on foreign exchanges. The panel has also proposed measures to encourage global companies to list in India. The existing legal framework doesn’t allow a company incorporated in India to directly list on foreign bourses. Similarly, companies incorporated outside India cannot directly list their equity shares on the Indian stock exchanges.

- Context–The UK has launched the new points-based immigration system for EU citizens which will came into effect from Jan 1, 2021 and which intends to change the way EU migrants will come to the UK to work, study, visit or join their family. Non-EU citizens already follow a points-based system to migrate to the UK.
- What is it? – Under this system, points will be assigned for specific skills, qualifications, salaries or professions and visas will be awarded to those who will have enough points.
- Requirements – Non-British citizens need to show the job offer from an approved sponsor and that they speak English. Salary thresholds have been established. With some tradable characteristics, a total of 70 points are required to be eligible to apply.
- Criticisms – The system relies on the government’s perception of what skills are valuable, rather than on the views of the employers who are to recruit them. Eligibility criteria can be unpredictable because the bar for admission will be higher in periods when more other people are applying.
- Note – The implementation of system does not change the status of those EU citizens already in the UK as per the European Union Settlement Scheme (EUSS).
