1. A grave situation in North India as Dera Chief convicted : Extremely tense situation prevailed in Punjab and Haryana as violence broke out immediately after Dera Sacha Sauda Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim was convicted by a CBI court in a rape case. The Panchkula district court witnessed huge police deployment, and violence all across, with many deaths reported. Thousands (maybe even lacs) of Dera followers are camping all over, including Panchkula. More than 100 companies of paramilitary forces have been deployed, and even Army columns have been made available for contingencies. A complete ban has been issued on carrying of firearms, internet mobile services in the area, with orders to shut down private gun houses selling arms and ammunition to license holders. Huge disruption to business happened as internet was completely shut down.

2. The Rs.200 notes bring in a new hope : The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will start pumping the fresh new, brightly coloured Rs.200 notes into the system in a bid to ease cash transactions and make the currency system more efficient. There was a gap between Rs.100 and Rs.500 as felt in daily transactions by citizens, making circulation difficult. A logical need was felt to introduce the missing denomination. ATMs may need to be re-calibrated to accommodate the new note, though thankfully no major disruption is expected like December 2016! The base colour of the Rs.200 note will be bright yellow, a welcome change from bland, staid government-type colours! 3. Supreme Court does it again - keeps the flame burning bright :  Most Legal luminaries and experts hailed the Supreme Court for treating the 'Right to Privacy' as a fundamental right for common citizens. This would have a far-reaching impact on almost all aspects of life. There is no scope for debae too, as all nine judges were on same page with regard to right to privacy as integral fundamental right. However not everyone believed that the judgement was significant. Former Supreme Court Judge K T Thomas said the judgement had merely made an interpretation. Exact laws and implications are to be seen in the coming days and months. A comprehensive Bodhi on this topic will be released soon on Bodhi Booster  |  Compilation by PT's IAS Academy, Civils Tapasya Portal

4. Fresh Aadhar for Infosys as founders make a comeback : Nandan Nilekani, who conceptualised and executed the idea of a unique identification number for every Indian (through the UIDAI), stated the need for good corporate governance in his first conference call after his comeback to Infosys. The task is to get the right person for the job (One only wonders how they failed to do so with the team they are now replacing!). Nilekani’s return, one of the most dramatic comebacks in recent corporate history, marks the second instance of a retired co-founder being handed the reins to steer the marquee corporation out of trouble. The Tata saga and now the Infosys one, brings into focus the failures at top corporates to chart a proper succession plan. 5. The Privacy Whammy could hit companies hard : The Supreme Court verdict holding privacy to be a fundamental right could impact how internet companies collect and use personal data. Big companies use data as oil, running their giant data machines to throw relevant commercial advts etc., using consumer data, and make tonnes of money. The nine-judge SC bench has referred to big data analytics by companies such as Uber, Airbnb and Facebook, but left it to a recently formed committee under former Supreme Court judge BN Srikrishna to lay down a data protection framework. It cited an unprecedented need for regulation regarding the extent to which such information can be stored, processed and used by private individuals as well as protection of such information from the state. Read more on such topics here |  Compilation by PT's IAS Academy, Civils Tapasya Portal

6. No need for Engineering NEET : The Human Resource Development Ministry has decided to junk plans to introduce a common engineering entrance exam from next year. The All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), the country’s technical education regulator, had announced in March that a national-level common entrance examination for engineering colleges would be conducted from the next academic year in 2018. This compilation by Civils Tapasya portal, PT's IAS Academy

7. The
Aadhar will live on : There is sufficient leeway for the government to pursue digitalisation programmes, many of which are centred around Aadhaar, with the Supreme Court setting out legitimate state aims that can allow linkage of UID with social welfare schemes. This would mean initiatives like linking Aadhaar to tax returns can be justified on the grounds that this will help check fraud through use of multiple PAN cards commonly used to duck tax. The court itself has asked for Aadhaar linkage to mobile telephone connections and its use for verification of identities does not seem likely to be affected. A full Bodhi on this topic is available on Bodhi Booster knowledge portal.

8. Chinese rants continue, this time bordering on the not-so-serious :
Flustered with the unfavourable Dokalam fallout, China  issued the latest safety advisory to its citizens living in India. This is the second such notice amid the border row dispute between the two countries. The advisory has asked them to be alert and its validity is till December 31. It said all Chinese in India must carry personal identification and be cautious and strictly comply with Indian laws and regulations and respect local religious practices and customs. 9. UIDAI's father on Data Protection Law :
Former UIDAI Chairman Nandan Nilekani - a digital visionary - has said that India needed a data protection law as soon as possible as it is a fundamental thing. Crores of users should be in a position to demand from the domestic or foreign companies to share their data when needed. The need for the law was felt after online messaging service WhatsApp changed its policy of non-sharing of data for its users after acquisition by Facebook in 2016 to permit sharing of the attributes of its users for advertisement targeting. This compilation by Civils Tapasya portal, PT's IAS Academy

10. Demonetisation final data expected, finally! The Reserve Bank of India's annual report likely to be released soon would throw light on the amount of counterfeit currency notes that have found their way into the banking system. While past data indicates small amounts, the flood of currency due to demonetisation may make it into hundreds of crores of rupees though few hazard a guess on it.  A recent study by Indian Statistical Institute pegged value of fake notes at Rs 400 crore. If amount of counterfeit is huge then the government, banks and RBI may have to decide on how to share liability. Read all about DeMo here
